Tutorial on Inclusive Design for Older and Disabled Users (Prof. Helen Petrie, Univ. of York). (afternoon)
Location: Lloyd Building Room LB01 (see map of TCD)
Time: 1.30pm - 5.30pm (afternoon session) (registration from 8.30 - 9.30)

This workshop will consider the differences characteristics of older and disabled people, their attitudes and use of technologies and methodologies for how to design technologies (from websites to mobile phones) that are attractive and usable for these groups.  An added bonus is that it has been repeated shown that technologies that are designed “inclusively” for the needs of disabled and older people, are also more attractive and usable by all users.

Workshop on Experience, Usability, and Functionality: Exploring the components of interaction, Organised by HFRG, UCC and UL. (all day)
Location: Lloyd Building Room 1.07 (see map of TCD)
Time: 9.30am - 5pm (registration from 8.30 - 9.30)

Evaluation of computer systems is an essential activity in their development, design and implementation. There currently exists a wide range of evaluation techniques assessing qualities such as: satisfaction, usability, efficiency, learnability, and so forth. This workshop aims to develop this model and explore the practical implications of applying a multi-component model to HCI research and design.

Professor Barry Smyth - Towards Web Search 3.0

After years of relatively limited technological innovation the Google-dominated world of Web Search is beginning to change. In this talk we will discuss where Web search may be heading, focusing on a number of large-scale research projects that are trying to develop the "next big thing" in Web search. We will consider some important recent initiatives on how to improve the quality of the Web search experience by helping search engines to respond to our individual needs and preferences. In turn, we will focus on some innovative work on how to take advantage of the inherently collaborative nature of Web search as we discuss recent attempts to develop so-called "social search engines"
